N LaBute is an American film director, screenwriter and playwright. His plays take a shockingly honest look at modern
life and relationships and many take themes of beauty and what it means. His characters are often faced with situations that
make them confront themselves and their assumptions of who they are. His acclaimed play The Mercy Seat was
one foh te first to take on the aftermath of the Sepember 11 attacks on the World Trade Centre, where a man who has avoided
death because he was with his mistress instead of at work, considers whether to go back to his life or start a new life with
his lover.
The Shape of Things was first produced on stage
in 2001 and LaBute directed a film version in 2003 starring Paul Rudd and Rachel Weisz.
